'G' Sounds
Sound recording of the green space at the intersection of Fowler and Eighth Street across from the Shirley Clements Mewborn Softball Field and in front of the O'Keefe Custodial Services Building on Georgia Tech's campus. Green space includes trees, bushes, grass, and is bordered by a sidewalk alongside the streets. Birds, passing vehicles, and bustling greenery can all be heard. Recorded on an iPhone 8.
Detaching the bass line from the melody and using repeated notes instead of contrapuntal ideas was a compositional technique commonly used in 18th century galant style music. This excerpt shows a bass line that is doing just that. Often the bass repeats the same note throughout an entire bar, while the melody moves above without directly interacting with it.
These nine measures from Franz Danzi's Sinfonia Concertante in Eb major contain a typical harmonic progression found in the Galant period. This excerpt is split into two equal phrase. Each starting on a tonic chord, that is prolonged with a dominant chord, that lands on the tonic again, this time in first inversion. This is a common feature of the Galant style.
In Galant style music commonly there was only on melodic line present at a time, often accompanied by fast rhythmic harmony. In this example the Flute has the melody while being accompanied by the strings. After several seconds, the two switch roles.
The melody in the Galant style interrupts the preceding melodic tendency with a sequence of short, well-defined phrases of two to four measures in length. These phrases establish a period and a melodic style that is characterized by frequent cadences. The melody from the beginning of Mozart Flute Concerto in G (K.313) is an example of the characteristics of the melody in the Galant style.
This is an example of the thin texture preferred in the galant style. It is an excerpt from the 18th century work Sinfonia Concertante for flute, clarinet and orchestra by Franz Danzi. The accompaniment is homophonic and has little activity going on behind the melody. This is a change from the previous baroque style, which often featured dense polyphonic accompaniment.
The galant triplet (three-note division of a beat) is common rhythmic device used in eighteenth century galant music. Triplets are used in this excerpt of Edouard Du Puy's Ungdom og Galskab (Youth and Folly) to separate sections, from a duple to triple meter, as well as adding rhythmic interest in this overture.
