A steel string cedar-wood guitar is prepared by weaving a 1/2 inch x 4 inch piece of folded paper between the strings of a guitar near the bridge, which creates a more percussive quality to the strings when struck by reducing the sustain of the string and emphasizing the attack of the notes. The melody utilizes the phrygian mode of western music, a mode often used in folk music around the world. Recorded on a Yeti Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone in a small room.

Title: Descending Chromatic scale on keyboard
Description: A descending Chromatic scale (playing a semitone below it is pitch one note at a time on a 88 key keyboard which includes 7 octaves) played on a Yamaha PSR-E453 keyboard by me recorded and edited in a small bedroom with a midi (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) cable on Logic Pro X (music editing software). This sound was inspired by the discussion in class about discordance in music early African America studies and me relating it back to how a descending chromatic scale reflects back to the discordance that was used by many African Artists during the time but is now used and praised within Eurocentric music stylings.

This recording is of the sound of the "High Five Friday" event at the VCU Compass. Laughter, music, and encouragement fills the air as people walking by our given high fives. The sound of a hand making contact with another is recorded carefully. It is a fun event and many people pass by receiving their morning high fives.
Sound recording of a student playing a cabasa. A cabasa is a percussion instrument that is made of a steel ball chain wrapped around a wide cylinder with a handle. The original design of the instrument (agbe) originates from Africa in which gourds were used. The rhythm played in the recording is an eighth not followed by two sixteenth notes in a 2/4 meter. Recorded on a ZoomH1 recorder.
Sound recording of a student playing the first section of the "Reveille" for Trumpet. The song is being played on a beginning trumpet and mouthpiece, and was recorded on a ZoomH1 Recorder.
