A custodian fiddles with his keys as he waits for the elevator to arrive. We stand in a crowded waiting area for an elevator; there are many elevators in this area. A pre-recorded male voice announces: “Floor 1, going up.” The custodian plays music aloud from his phone as he enters the elevator. This recording portrays the everyday lives of those who may not be receiving nor directly giving care, but who facilitate the overall flow and cleanliness of a hospital. A woman in the elevator exclaims, “Beautiful!” The woman’s exclamation demonstrates the multiplicity of emotion and experience in the hospital. This interaction signifies the diversity of interactions that one may experience in a hospital setting.

The video of Dorothy Donegan playing the piano reminded me of my keyboard at home. In my room on my Yamaha keyboard I played every key from left to right.

Marlena Ashby

2 small metal apartment keys and a plastic key fob jingling on a keyring. Recorded on iPhone6s.

Angela Atwater

Sound recording of a set of keys being inserted into an SUV ignition tumbler switch. After a second the key is turned which promotes the engine to turn on and a rhythmic beep to sound as the car begins to warm up and then settle. This was recorded on a rainy day, so there are faint sounds of rain droplets landing on the roof and hood of the car. The vehicle has around 86,000miles and is a 2012 Toyota Rav4.

Title: Descending Chromatic scale on keyboard

Description: A descending Chromatic scale (playing a semitone below it is pitch one note at a time on a 88 key keyboard which includes 7 octaves) played on a Yamaha PSR-E453 keyboard by me recorded and edited in a small bedroom with a midi (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) cable on Logic Pro X (music editing software). This sound was inspired by the discussion in class about discordance in music early African America studies and me relating it back to how a descending chromatic scale reflects back to the discordance that was used by many African Artists during the time but is now used and praised within Eurocentric music stylings.

This is an audio recording of me typing on my Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Series laptop. Audio was recorded using a Zoom H4n Pro recorder. In the audio clip, the sounds of typing as well as the hum of my computer can be heard. In this clip I am typing up my lab report for science class.

Sound recording of a key card swipe into a dorm building from an IPhone 4. It goes from the rattling of the keys in the beginning to the swiping of the card. It finishes with the door closing itself.

I have a habit of spinning and snapping my keychain against my palm. For the sake of the recording, I repeated this action for twenty seconds. The bundle actually contains only two keys (one for my dorm room and one for my mailbox) and the rest consists of plastic (my Duke card and six Ben&Jerry's Flavor Fanatic Coupons). Recorded by iPhone Voice Memo.
