architectures of sound

Samuel Porta

Sound recording of a Spanish undergraduate student asking for directions to his chemistry class to a Non-Spanish speaking undergraduate student. The recording highlights the challenges of language barriers in the aural architecture of the space. The recording was taken around 12 pm in the hallway between classes in the Klaus building, which is why other students can be heard conversing in the background. Recorded with an iPhone 6 using the built-in microphone and voice memo application.

This sound was recorded during a busy lunch break for students in the Georgia Tech food court located on the second floor of the Student Center. It was a weekday during the spring semester so the space was very crowded. The major sound of the recording is various groups of students talking. Chairs being moved across the floor and trays being set on the table can also be heard. This was recorded using an iPhone 6.

Benjamin Cohen

Sound recording from the lobby of Georgia Tech's Love Manufacturing Building, a multipurpose space filled with both labs and lecture halls, around midday on Friday, just after a class change, where many students and faculty were moving through the space. Recorded on a Google Pixel 2.

Amelia Keller

Sound recording of my father pushing a lawnmower across the front grass lawn of our house on a warm spring day. The sound of the engine of the lawnmower is the overpowering noise, but the subdued sounds include the occasional crunch of grass, leaves, and/or sticks as the blades grind them into small pieces. At around 23 seconds in, the sound of the lawnmower being turned around on the concrete to be pushed the other way can be heard. Recorded on an iPhone 7 Plus.

Lexi Wagner

Sound recording of someone typing their response to an essay prompt. This recording was done in a room with audible air conditioning. The laptop being used is a Lenovo Ideapad U530 Touch. Recorded by an IPhone 6s with headphones plugged in.

Sarah McDougal

Sound recording of an interaction between a third year Georgia Tech student with two members of the Georgia Tech Dining Staff at the omelette station in Brittain Dining Hall on a Thursday morning. In the background of the conversation, you can hear the omelettes sizzling on a pan, while another staff member comes to join the conversation. Recorded with Voice Memos on an iPhone X.

Jenny Ament

Sound recording of "Bell Tower," a large metal wind-chime public sculpture, near highway traffic on a windy winter day. Recorded with Zoom H6 recorder and Audio-Technica 8010 condenser microphone.
